How do I know what size filter to get for my central air?

I just bought a house and I was looking to change the filter on the central air unit. When I took out the old one, it looked to be the wrong size. The opening inside was not completely covered by the filter, the top part of the %26quot;square was not totaly covered. Is there a way for me to find out what size airfilter i should be using? You should be able to measure the opening and depth with a tape measure.

Filters are typically a half inch smaller than what the dimensions say on the filter.
