Is there a way to tell if your air filter needs changing by how dirty it is?

Like how dark it is or something. or like if you put it up to the sun, if you can see light going through it. that sort of thing? i was just courious to see if i should change my air filter.Is there a way to tell if your air filter needs changing by how dirty it is?If it's black on one side, change it. That simple. No need to involve a sun dial.
