Before every season you should remove your air conditioner filter and give it a good cleaning. If you have a window unit or one with a permanent removable filter, take it out, clean all of the dust and dirt off of it, and then get into it with a scrub brush or pressure washer and get the crud out of the small mesh that's in the filter. Basically your air conditioner is choking, which can result in less cooling, higher energy bills and a shorter life of your air conditioner.
I was a smoker and I'd remove and clean my air conditioner filter every month and it provided me with reliable and cool service.
